München, Januar 1879
Dear Sir!
In reply to your letter from the 17. Jan. I have the pleasure of telling you that I have already begun the translation of Cherubini's biography being just at leisure to do so. Allow me to state that I undertake to do so out of pure interest to the great composer whom I admire since my boy's-days and whose character is very sympathizing to me - particularly in the way your skilful hand has drawn it.
Should your Editors have any objections to my translating the book, pray let me know so before I got to it.
I see that I did not write my name clearly, nevertheless your letter came into my hands - maybe that you found it printed in your musical reports as Charles Hallé played my works during the last piano-concert and quartett several times in England.
